Sound Familiar?

If this sounds like your house most weeknights, you're not alone.

Assignments are constantly left until the last minute.

Organization feels overwhelming — for them, and for you.

Your student knows exactly what to do. They just can't seem to start.

School has become a source of stress at home.

These challenges are more common than you may think — and with the right guidance, students can build the habits, confidence, and independence to manage them successfully.

I didn’t set out to do this work — I spent years watching sharp, capable students get boxed in by a system that never asked how they actually think. The gap between the report card and the real kid in front of me is fixable. That’s why I started Learn Smart.

I hold a Master’s in Education from UNC and a Bachelor’s from Meredith College, and have spent 15+ years coaching high school and college students on organization, time management, and follow-through. My work also includes coaching NCAA Division I student-athletes at UNC — experience that sharpened how I help students balance academics, responsibilities, and independence.

My Philosophy

Every student has something real underneath the struggle — a skill or way of thinking the standard path never noticed. I build the plan around that, not a one-size-fits-all system.

What Experience Has Taught Me

The students who do best aren’t always the ones with the highest grades — they’re the ones with a plan they understand, and someone checking in on it consistently.

"My job isn't to make a student look good on paper. It's to help them figure out who they actually are — and then make sure the paper finally catches up."

What makes the difference for the families I work with:

Personalized strategy, never a template
Ongoing mentorship, not a one-time session
Direct, honest communication with families
A long-term success mindset, not just one deadline
How It Works

Four steps toward clarity.

No guesswork — just a real plan, built and adjusted as your student grows.

01

Initial Consultation

A real conversation about where your student is right now — their habits, their challenges, and what's getting in the way of their best work.

02

A Personalized Plan

A specific plan built around how your student thinks and works — covering organization, time management, and accountability, never a generic packet.

03

Weekly Check-ins

Regular sessions, in person or online, to review assignments, adjust the plan, and reinforce the executive functioning skills that make it stick.

04

Long-Term Independence

A gradual transition toward your student confidently managing school on their own — without losing the systems that got them there.

Organizational Turnaround

Stopped Missing Assignments.

A middle schooler was capable but constantly behind — losing assignments, forgetting deadlines, shutting down under pressure. We built an organization system suited to how he actually thinks, with regular check-ins instead of one-time advice. Within a semester, his grades and his confidence both moved in the same direction.

Renewed Confidence

Balanced Academics and Extracurriculars.

A sophomore was juggling honors classes, two extracurriculars, and a part-time job — and dropping balls everywhere. We built a weekly planning system suited to her actual schedule, with check-ins to catch problems early instead of after the damage was done. Within two months, she was managing her own calendar without reminders from anyone.

Independent Planning

Built an Independent Planning Routine.

A rising senior had a long list of responsibilities and no real system for managing any of it — deadlines, recommendation requests, a part-time job, four classes. We built a routine she could run herself: one calendar, a weekly review, and the habit of looking two weeks ahead instead of two days. By spring, she was managing her own deadlines without reminders, and the routine has carried into every part of her school year since.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is academic coaching?
Executive functioning skills are not fully developed until approximately age 26. Even so, many middle school, high school, and college-aged students benefit from additional support in developing these essential skills to better manage academics, organization, time management, daily responsibilities, and independent living.
Who is academic coaching for?
Students who are bright but struggle with organization, time management, or follow-through — typically middle school through college. If assignments are getting missed, plans aren't sticking, or your student feels constantly behind despite trying hard, this is the right fit.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. We work in person in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, and online with families anywhere — the experience is just as personal either way.
How is this different from a tutor?
A tutor helps with a subject. We help with the bigger picture — organization, time management, accountability, and the executive functioning skills that carry a student well beyond any one class.
What does the first consultation cost?
Nothing. The first conversation is free, with no obligation — it's simply how we figure out if and how we should work together.
How quickly can we get started?
Most families have their first consultation within a week of reaching out. From there, we build a plan and timeline around your student's specific needs.
What does a typical week look like for a student working with you?
It depends on the student, but most start with a weekly check-in to review assignments, plan ahead, and troubleshoot whatever's getting in the way — built around their actual schedule, not a generic template.
Do you work with college students?
Yes. Many of the same challenges — procrastination, disorganization, missed deadlines — show up even more once a student is managing their own schedule for the first time. We work with college students the same way we do high schoolers, usually meeting virtually.
Do parents participate?
As much or as little as makes sense for your family. Most parents get a brief update after each session, while the coaching itself happens directly between Missy and your student — the goal is for your student to build the skills, not for you to manage the process.
